Tangs Shopping Mall

Location: Tangs (310 & 320 Orchard Road, Singapore 238864)

Brief introduction:

Tangs, is one of Singapore's oldest departmental stores, located along Orchard Road, in the center of all shopping activities in Singapore. The good thing about Tangs is that It offers buyers the convenience of shopping for large variety of merchandise at very decent and reasonable prices. This departmental store bears a very huge historical significance in Singapore. Back then, it was an emporium of a merchant who started his business in the year 1932. As time passed, business flourished and it gets better and better. Tangs, today, is a now five-storey departmental store and stocks items ranging from spices to shoes to electronic gadgets and many many more.

History:

In the 1950s, Tang Choon Keng, founder of TANGS bought some land on Orchard Road, in Singapore which is the now the current location of TANGS. When CK Tang bought the land, it was actually situated near a Chinese cemetery, which implies bad luck in Chinese culture. However, this general belief did not affect CK Tang's views on his new bought land, and soon he went on continuing to develop TANGS.

Changes over the years:

1932- Tangs, founded in 1932 by Tang Choon Keng, is one of Singapore's oldest surviving departmental stores.

1960-61- The House of Tang closed briefly due to a disagreement with the Singapore Manual and Mercantile Workers' Union.

1975- Tang decided to pull down the old building and to construct a 33-storey hotel and a shopping complex in its place. The new building retained the store's signature green-tiled Chinese roof.

1982- The Dynasty Hotel (later sold to Marriott and renamed to Marriott Hotel in 1995) and the new shopping complex opened in June 1982.

1994- Besides being a shopping haven, Tangs was also known, at that time, for its policy of not opening on Sundays. Tang was a staunch Christian and had implemented the policy so his family and Christian employees could go to church. This practice ceased in July 1994.

Land use:

Orchard Tangs was a leading fashion lifestyle retailer in Singapore since 1932, now regarded as a Singaporean shopping institution. The building is built according to the theme of Chinese empire. Inside the building consists of many shops ranging from banking to household appliances. There is also a subway linked to other shopping malls, hence Orchard Tangs is a mixed landuse building.

Compare and contrast:

In the past, Tangs uses mixed landuse. Now in the present, Tangs still uses it. Back then in the past, Tangs was visited by both Singaporeans and tourists mostly for shopping purposes. Currently, it has already expanded and not only can you shop, but you can also eat there. There are even banks in the mall too.
